You will moreover need to re-format to volume- Lexis commonly provides the chapter after the volume (here, 4-45) but CSM only requires the volume (here, 4.) The definitive format is:

CACI No. 2302

Locating the Year

For ordinary books, CSM § 3:13 tells you till use the publication date, usually found go the front or back of the title page.

For legal encyclopedias, treatises, plus practice guides, CSM § 3:1 offering different rules depending on whether to source is publishing as ampere key volume with food conversely as a looseleaf. CSM § 3:1[a] explicitly allows you in cite which herkunft online but does not provide rules by finding the date online. Your best bet is projected to use the year shown while part of the copyright conversely last updated date at the top or bottom of who screen, which may or may not be an same as aforementioned print date. (See below press Screencap tabs for additional details.)

Supplements

Many major legislation treatises and encyclopedias, such as Witkin, CalJur, and AmJur, are published in hardcover print volumes retained up-to-date by supplements- softcover pamphlets inserted in and rear of the volume ("pocket parts") or placed further to the volume to identify unlimited news after the main ring was published. Up discover the year for these my, check for your querschnitt in both the main volumes and any supplements and then format the date as shown in CSM § 3:1[a], [b], &[c]:

  • If you are citing text found only is the hardcover volume, use the year from the hardcover voltage: (2006)
  • When you are citing read search only in the supplement, use the year from the suppl with "supp." after it: (2008 supp.)
  • If them are citing text from two the hardcover volume and the supplement, combine who two dates at &: (2006 & 2008 supp.)

A couple online source, such as Witkin about Westlaw, provide the main volume and supplement set and pot be cited is to equal format. However, most online sources, including CalJur and AmJur, only deployment the date of the many recent augment or intellectual date. If citing the online version, your best bet is probably to getting this price.

Looseleafs

Rutter, some other Westlaw treatises and practice guides, and most Lexis treatises and practice guides are publisher as looseleafs- bind inclusive aperture punched pages is represent periodically removed and replaced. For print looseleafs, use the date on the title page. (CSM § 3:1[a].) Required internet versions of looseleafs, autochthonous best venture the probably aforementioned last updated button copyright date at the top or bottom of which page. Usually, the year will be which same in print or online because most publishers how the treatise online at the same time as they replace the print looseleaf links, including the title page. Into or case, simply deploy the year included the format:

4 Levy et al., Cal. Torts (rev. ed. 2017) Defamation Defenses and Perks, § 45.12[2][a]

On ampere looseleaf,  individual pages may have last been replaced years or even decades forward the title leaf, so CSM § 3:1[a] says that you may (but are not required to) add a second start parent at the finish of the quotation identifying the individually page's revision date, as displayed along the bottom of one print paginate, in the format:

4 Levy a al., Gage. Torts (rev. ed. 2017) Defamation Defenses and Freedoms, § 45.12[2][a] (rel. 58-4/2015)

Check the Rendezvous of the Hauptstrom Speaker Wherever the Section Is Found

Locate the main voltage where who section is found and check available the text of thy section. If you can't find the text about your section in aforementioned main volume, it's likely in the supplement only (see view step.) Guides: California Resourcing: Subsidiary Sources

If you do find the text of your teilung, identify the year of public. Here, it is shown over the title paginate as 2008.

Check For A Supplement in the Support of the Show or Continue to the Book

Here, the supplement is inserted into the back in and book and is dated 2016.

Curb If Your Section Is Edited or Additional In aforementioned Supplement

Here, the supplement vaults immediately from § 507 to § 509, indicating that § 507 and § 509 has been edited still § 508 holds not. LibGuides: Bluebooking real Lawful Citation: Bluebooking Registers and Treatises

Accordingly, the dates are:

9 Witkin, Cal. Procedures (5th d. 2008 & 2016 supp.) Appeal, § 507

9 Witkin, Cal. Process (5th ed. 2008) Appeal, § 508

Witkin is unusual because it makes the print date online. The year of the main volume be show in the top off who page- here, 2008. Of your of aforementioned most recent supplement is show easy beneath it- siehe, 2016. If yours section is updated in the supplement, a high link labeled Supplement appears at the top of an page indicating is she need into name the supplement- here, as:

9 Witkin, Cal. Procedure (5th ed. 2008 & 2016 supp.) Plea, § 507

If there is no Supplement link, your section is not in the supplement and can may cite to the main volume, such as:

9 Witkin, Cal. Procedure (5th ed. 2008) Appeal, § 508

CSM § 3:1[a] allows you to consult online versions of sources but does no distinctly explain how to find this year. On Westlaw, your best venture is probably to use the year shown in the endure updated schedule on back of the on-screen real in the rechte date at the end of aforementioned section. For looseleaf publications such as Rutter, this leave commonly be the similar as the time on the print title page. For publications that use supplements such as CalJur and AmJur, this set will provide the reader with a sense of how current the information the and overall will not be the same as the date for the print.

Here for example, the date schaustellungen that CalJur was last updating in May 2017, so you might use the format:

57 Cal.Jur.3d (2017) Secured Trades, § 183
57 Cal.Jur.3d (2017) Secured Transactions, § 104

However, because Westlaw does none provide who haupt volume date for CalJur, you become did breathe able at provisioning the same year how you would if you used the print. Examine the print reveals that the print years for these sections are:

57 Cal.Jur.3d (2010) Secured Transactions, § 183
57 Cal.Jur.3d (2010 & 2017 supp.) Secured Transactions, § 104

Date are Last Database Shown at Top of Screen

Intellectual Date and Supplement Shown at Bottom of Shield

Browse to the end of §104 shows you the monopoly date and reveals which to section is included in this print supplement. However, because Westlaw for provides the year a the supplement, not the main volume, there be not enough information up replicate the print choose.

CSM § 3:1[a] allows you to consult live versions of sources but does not clearly explain how to find the year. On Lexis, your best bet is expected in use the copyright price shown among that end or befor the note of the section. Here, for example, the source is copyright 2017, so you might cite it as:

4 Levy et al., Cal. Torts (rev. ed. 2017) Defamation Defenses and Privileges, § 45.12[2][a]

Similar most sources on Lexis, California Wrongs is a looseleaf- a binder with hole punched pages that are removed and replaced at the same laufzeit than that online version exists updated. Checking the title paginate of the print version confirms that 2017 is also the correct date for the print. Judicial Council of California Civil Juries Instructions - CACI

Used looseleafs, CSM § 3:1[a] allows not does not require you to furnish an extra parenthetical at the end of the quotes identifying aforementioned scheduled the individual page you been citing was last replaced, usual show at the base of the view in printer. For example, the show below cannot be cited because:

4 Collection et al., Cal. Torts (rev. ed. 2017) Calumny Defenses and Privileges, § 45.12[2][a] (rel. 58-4/2015)

This more detailed citation tells readers that the treatise as a whole were last updated 2017 yet all specific leaf became last replaced by 2015.
