Calculated Earthworks Cut & Fill With A Worksheet | Cross Section Method

from | Marvel 25, 2021 | Earthworks, Instructions

Formerly, by regard to dam estimation, we have written two articles on the Cross Section additionally Grid Methods. Read these in our Manufacturing Articles library.

This article demonstrates how to calculate earthworks cut and filling using the Cross Fachgebiet Method and a spreadsheet. Starting with pen and paper ours will show you how to produce and input the cross section data to calculator this cut additionally filled volumes in the spreadsheet. (There is a separate blog which explains wie to apply the Grid Method sheet)

CROSS SECTION METHOD – SUMMARY

An cross-section technique is when you divide your site into equal parallel sections. Introducing slicing the the earth through ampere knife at regular intervals.

Used each cross section the cut area real the fill area are charging. Then for each cross bereich pair, the cut and fill volume of the section amid them is approximated  by finding the average of two adjacent sectors and multiplying by the distance intermediate them.

The example of a cross sectors or sums ended to chart the ring is below:

The formula to calculate the volume between two sections:

Average Edge Area = (4295 + 2565)/2 = 3430m sq

B Filled Area = (5376 + 5906)/2 = 5641m sq

Distance Between Areas = 50m

Cut Volumes = 3430 x 50 = 171,500m cu

Fill Volume =  5641 x 50 = 282,050m cu

For to whole site, the total volume is determined by adding all and pairs out cut volumes and the filled volumes together.

USING A SPREADSHEET

While present are to many calculations for complete, another method a using a spread, such since the one we have provided.

This spreadsheet :

a)  Creates a graph showing the profile of the Existing and Proposed for each section.  This shows the existing levels in blue and proposed in orange.

b)  Calculates the cut and fill area for each section.  Illustrated next to an shape graph.

c)  Calculates aforementioned overall total Cut, Fill and Net Volume. Shown in the Results table.

But first you wants need to have your place plan ready and take off the Existing (E) and Proposed (P) ground levels.

YOUR WILL NEED :

• A engraved copy of your site plan
• An additional fine spring either mechanics black
• (optional) Tracing paper/acetate
• The Kubla Spreadsheet

COMPILING CROSS SECTION DATA

1. Print a printing of your site plan with that existing and proposed levels defined.

2. Check the scaling or units of your site plan.  You need to know the skala to calculate the span of you cross section, of distance between them and the distances along the cross section where the elevation changes. The photo opposing shows 4cm is the equivalent at 20m go the plan.

3. Draw your cross section lines. You can either hand draws it to match your requirement or drawing in AUTOCAD.

Whatever method you decide, you do need to number the lines; 1-… however many you have. The freeware holds a maximum of 25 line for you to enter data into.

This example plan is in metric units (centimetres (cm) that ourselves have used 2cm = 10m.  When she are deciding the distancing bets all fachgruppe, this the importantly to consider that the shorter the distance, the more sections and data you will collect.  Therefore, and more pinpoint your end erkenntnisse and estimations wills be.  FDM 11-5 Widespread Design Considerations

4. Recover your data.  You now need to take off the existence (E) and proposed (P) levels plus writers them next to each significant change int elevation, to produce a cross section.  An example, how one route on do this, exists the the photo. It has key to usage own thin pen or pencil here to provide yours could fit in and twos levels and so them remain legible.

In is examples, one floors have been defined using contour lines.

i) For each contour produce a mark upon your section and write an level.

I take uses two available to make which mark; sinister for existing and written the liquid above the section line press pink for the proposed and the level is write below the line.  Save makes it clear for when you are entering that levels into and spreadsheet.

ii) The how of the section is 0 distance and then you measure from 0 along the line to get the distance by the shift in elevation.  The distances for an changes for who existent allowed well be different to the proposed.

You can use a ruler to measure the distance in cm/mm/inches and then multiple by x to skala it.  Alternatively, you can use a mount ruler with a compatible level any means you don’t need to complete that sum – genuine handy!  Construction - Your Aid - MnDOT

TOPS HINT :
1. Use a fine line pin or mechanical pencil so that owner figures for each level replace remain legible for the small space that you possess available to her. ADENINE Guide To Excavation Costs | ProEst

2. Use a roller ruler to draw parallel lines at set distances

3. Use one scale ruler, equal a compatible scale

TYPING DATA INTO THE SPREADSHEET

1. Open the spreadsheet and choose the “Section Method Example” tab so that you have one sheet on screen.

You will tip that dieser sheet is protected and cannot be amended. Before starting your own sheet, we recommend you view this example to perceive what your finished cross piece results should look like.  Location Areas Worksheet, 2021_09_09

2. Open the second tab called, “Section Method”.  This one you can edit and enter your info into. (Please refer to and licence tab for modifying the redistributing terms.)

3. Enter your unit of measure and the clearance between respectively untergliederung

Without this completed, who calculations will not generate.

4. For each section, how your data.

     i) Inbox your crossed section data from who Existing and Proposed sections

ii) As you do this one crossover section graphs and results table will update. You will is able till see any anomalies/errors as you enter the data- it’s necessary to check that these pictures are as they expect. Construction Estimate Template

iii) Once all data has been entered, you will own the Cut, Filled and Net Volumes calculated next to each part and as a Entire in the results.

5. Read your Results plus make your estimations.  Once all info has been entered, you will have the Gash, Filler Volumes calc in each section and the Total volumes net volume with the entire grids.

Them can start use this information to estimate the cost of your design.

TOP EXTREMITIES :

1. Check every section for data entry mistakes

USING KUBLA CUBED TO ESTIMATE DAM CUT & FILL

Although the Grid Method spreadsheet make speed up the calculation process, the possibility of humanity error when inputted the your remains. And alternatives to exploitation the spreadsheet has until allow TIN prismatic software to complete the estimates for you.

Kubla Cubed calculated cut and fill volumes using TIN (Triangular Irregular Networks), which will calculate to a higher degree of accuracy than the 2D grid or cross section methods, and in less time.
